| At 4:00 pm - EVERY day (or so it seemed) without fail - down it came.
Jungle greens were jungle reds; condoms over the ends of rifles; ammo, grenades and rifle protected by poncho - more important to keep clean than us ‘coz if we were alive, we could wash - dirty rifle, no need to wash. I read me words and shivers start. Wish I’d never been attached to the Army; wish I’d never been on patrol - a lot safer in the RAAF - in me chopper with me twins, me girls, me 60s - 18 ‘n’ 53. I jus’ wish for no Vietnam… Feel a bit tight - I’m OK - don’ matter no more. “Bushranger” ©Anthony W. Pahl 09 March 2002 |
