Buahrangers Revetment: Poety and Stories by Vietnam Veteran, Anthony W. Pahl and friends

Controlled agony exhausts my being.
My eyes fill with the torrents of the monsoon.
The quickness in my heart drains my strength
just as the Mekong Delta drains the very essence of my life.

And my mind whirls unceasingly;
faster and faster like a runaway carousel.

What is it that I want to say?
What is it that I need to say?

I have insisted that ours is a friendship like few others.
I have perceived that my love is bounded in and by that friendship:
real and true:
eternal and pure:
conventional but, above all, unconditional.

And love bounded in and by friendship is, nevertheless, love.
I cannot… no, will not; deny that love.

You have forever changed within me, the world I have known.
You have enhanced in me, the gift of words.
You have encouraged me to propagate trust in myself.
You have opened my heart and my mind to myriad forms of love.

I must declare these things else I am not me
and to our friendship, I could otherwise never be true.

Thank you for being, my friend.

For my friend, Hans, the Australian Army Sailor, whose body made it home for a few years…
…and then joined his soul
