The scent of eucalyptus permeates the evening air and grey-green leaves of ghost gums seem to filter out despair. Silver moonbeams and grey shadows play hide-and-seek upon the ground; the crimson-ochre twilight is welcomed with an accolade of sound. The tawny frogmouth’s feathers rustle as it wakes at end of day while the kangaroos and joeys wander from the bush to play. The cicadas and the frogs combine their songs of old bush lore, as the yodel of the magpie salutes all that went before. The kookaburra laughs heartily at the departure of the light and darkness enfolds the owners of the unique Australian night. ©Anthony W. Pahl 19th February 2001 |
